Preparing, making and baking the perfect classic banana bread is something I have been doing for many decades. I first learned to make a classic banana bread for my father when I was a teenager. He loved homemade baked sweets and I was hppy to bake somethign for him every week.
I have baked hundreds of banana breads in my life and about 30 years ago, I added chocolate chips and have never looked back. Homemade Banana Bread just tastes so much better with chocolate chips baked in the recipe and the loaf.

I have baked Chocolate Chip Banana Bread with 3 bananas and sometimes 4 bananas. I have added sour cream, yogurt and a bit of milk. I have added normal chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, and even chocolate chunks. I have changed the flour ratio a few times as well. I have used brown sugar, light brown sugar, regular sugar and even sugar substitute. I have tried this recipe with baking powder and without and without is undoubtedly the best. Lastly, we are a NO NUTS type of family in our Banana Bread Recipe. My husband would love if I would leave out the chocolate chips and add the nuts - but he has been vetoed long ago! LOL! ♥☺
In my kiddos opinion and my own, the very Best Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe ever is with three very ripe bananas, and if you happen to have frozen bananas — EVEN better. The 2/3 smashed bananas and 1/3 chunky bananas is KEY as well. Melted unsalted butter, real turbinado sugar, with vanilla, without baking powder, a moderate amount of flour and the KEY ingredient is MINI chocolate chips. Don’t use regular chocolate chips, don’t use chocolate chunks, but you must use the mini chocolate chips. I don’t exactly know why, but this recipe just tastes SO MUCH better with the mini chocolate chips. And just 1 cup, don’t use more or the banana bread is way too chocolate-y and yes, that can happen!
The Best Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe Ever
3 very ripe bananas
1/2 cup butter, melted (1 stick)
1 cup real turbinado sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup mini chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray a 9×5 loaf pan with nonstick spray and set aside. If you prefer, you can line your pan with parchment paper as well, but I never do.
In a bowl, mash your bananas. I mash two bananas to the consistency of baby food and mash one banana just once over with a fork, leaving it quite lumpy. Set aside.
In a bowl, whisk together the sugar and the melted butter. Crack your eggs open in a cup and whisk by themselves, then stir the eggs into the sugar and butter mixture. Add the mashed bananas and the vanilla. Mix gently until combined.
Add the flour, baking soda and salt. Mix gently until combined. DO NOT over beat your flour or your banana bread will be dense instead of moist. Fold in the mini chocolate chips.
Pour the entire mixture into the pre-sprayed loaf pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes. It really depends on your own oven. Poke a long toothpick in the center of the loaf to check for doneness.
Let the freshly baked chocolate chip banana bread cool for approximately 30 minutes before slicing.
