The SpongeBob Musical opened June 19 here in Chicago's Oriental Theatre and is there through Sunday, July 10. My kids and I had the pleasure of receiving an invite and saw seeing SpongeBob in Bikini Bottom yesterday!
We first discovered SpongeBob whilst living abroad as expats in Beijing. Television reception in China was very scarce and well, we didn't speak Chinese. My daughter, then 18 months, fell head over heels for SpongeBob and has loved him ever since. We watched SpongeBob on DVD that entire year and have been watching him ever since. He never fails to make us giggle with his silly antics.
The Best Day Ever!
We saw The SpongeBob Musical on stage, live at the theater, and it was amazing! I happen to be a huge fan of the arts and have a deep fondness for live theater. I think it is so important to expose my children (and myself) to theater productions. Thankfully, we live in an amazing city that has so much to offer us.
The cast was awesome. Ethan Slater as SpongeBob epitomized all of SpongeBob from his gait to his giggle. My kids simply adored Gavin Lee as Squidward--he was quite spectacular and had the sarcasm down perfectly. We fell in love with all the characters in Bikini Bottom. The music included original sons from Steven Tyler and Joe Perry and thankfully we remained in our seats instead of dancing in the aisles.
I loved the stage and the costumes. I especially loved how fun the costumes were. I could just see all the "fun and imagination" in the costumes and the set and it must have been such a joy to create all of these. My girls were in awe and were wishing for stage hand jobs.

The character-driven cartoon, SpongeBob, chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurably optimist and earnest sea sponge, and his undersea friends. The SpongeBob Musical does exactly that too! I love that SpongeBob always finds joy in everything and is always so positive, even though he is only a sponge.
