National Geographic Kids Almanac 2019

I went through high school and college researching my papers using newspaper articles, magazines, encyclopedias and reference books. I'm lucky enough to have grown up during a time when computers where just becoming available in schools. The internet didn't happen until I was in my first real job. I remember calling a friend of mine who told me about the internet and asking how do I access and search the world wide web. I've literally watched the explosion of the internet for the past three decades.

My children, on the other hand, have no idea how to walk into a library, look into a little box filled with cards, called a Card Catalog, and research chosen topics of interest. Human created metadata if you think about it. They simply hop on our laptop and look up whatever sparks an interest to them.

Did You Know: Africa and Europe are only NINE MILES apart at their closest point?

Over the past decade of home educating my children, I have amassed a small library right in our home. We have atlases, almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks, handbooks, non-fiction books, fiction books, classics, and guide books. These are all amazing reference sources that are research tools my kids can use today to simply read (because books are very interesting) or help prepare a paper or project. I have run out of shelf space in our school room, and need more book space!

These wonderful reference sources provide answers to specific questions, such as brief facts, statistics, or instructions; they also provide background information on topics of interest; or direct us to additional sources.

One reference guide that has been around through the entire growth of the internet and my children has been National Geographic. My father used to watch every National Geographic Special on television when I was a teen. Each special  was something unique and well, special on either nature, foreign culture, scientific breakthroughs, and things that were just really interesting. My father sparked my interest in National Geographic so very long ago.

I like to believe that I carried on a tradition by introducing my own children to National Geographic. However, my children don't just watch specials on television. We have received the National Geographic Kids Magazine for the past decade (thank you grandma and grandpa!!) {visit natgeokids.com/order to start your very own subscription of National Geographic for Kids magazine} which they adore perusing through.

We have numerous National Geographic DVD collections for unit studies on our shelves, and our personal library is filled with popular kid's National Geographic books we use as reference material or simply for pleasure reading. In addition, National Geographic Kids website, natgeokids.com, has so much to offer my children as well.  I have used this website for many years as supplemental learning for unit studies

Explorer Academy: The Nebula Secret

We also received the book, Explorer Academy: The Nebula Secret. This is the first book in National Geographic's new Explorer Academy seven book fiction series. If your tweens / middle schoolers  or early teens/high schoolers love book series like my own tween does, this is the PERFECT book to pack in their back pack on the first day back to school!

The NEW Explorer Academy book series will fill your children's brains and hearts with adventure, mystery, amazing adventures, science and the desire to learn more. The Explorer Academy book series may even inspire your own tweens and teens to become great explorers themselves someday.

National Geographic Kids Almanac 2019

In order for our tweens in find their greatest passions, we parents need to introduce as much adventure into their lives as possible. This is accomplished in the first Explorer Academy book, Explorer Academy: The Nebula Secret. My own tween declared to me last school year, after a unit study on space, that she was going to be one of the first women on the planet Mars. Who knows what the next explorer academy book will be about. My tween is hoping it will be on space exploration!

Did You Know: There are giant dust tornadoes on Mars?

National Geographic Kids Almanac 2019

I am going to do everything I can to foster her love of space and her growth in education for her desire to explore space when she grows up. National Geographic feels the same way about our children and that is why they create such amazing content for kids!
