4th Grade Home School Curriculum

Here is my TOP 4th Grade Home School Curriculum picks for homeschooling a 4th-grade student. Homeschooling 4th-grade students are all about developing the foundations of subjects and always adding in some fun and extra activities!

4th Grade Home School Curriculum

Whether you have made the decision to homeschool or are still considering the final decision to actually homeschool or home educate your children, one of the most major decisions is which curriculum will be used. The choices can be a bit overwhelming and I have highlighted what I have used over the years. Here are my selections for Grade 4.

Homeschooling is challenging but wonderful and very rewarding. My children are benefiting from me and me from them!

At this level, in Grade 4, your role as the home educating parent is moving towards the Hovering Parent (HOP). You will be checking in frequently to ensure they are understanding what is being asked of them and what they have read/learned. You will assist in brainstorming paper and project ideas and how to break the task down. You will always proofread papers and help them see errors in grammar and logical structure. As well as continuing to help study and manage time. Basically, making sure their best work is what is being turned in.

As you move towards the role of Hovering Parent in all but one or two subjects, you will begin to work on personal schedule-keeping with your child. Purchase your child a wall calendar or notebook planner and make sure your child has an alarm clock and a watch. Challenge for the year: your child should write in all appointments (doctor and dentist visits, holidays, birthday parties, babysitting jobs, visits with friends) on their own and get used to this task. Another challenge for the year: your child should establish a regular time for getting up and going to bed and other family deadlines and should keep them without prompting.

FOURTH GRADE HOME SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Math

Saxon Math Level 6/5 {4th grader} OR : Saxon Math (Level 5/4) Depending on your student

Does it work? Yes
Will I continue to use it? Yes.

Saxon Math is my friend! I have been using this curriculum for a long time. it works for us - I love - my kids know what is expected of them and we will keep using it this year as well. Plus, I already have all the books, so that sort of settles it.

Grammar

Shurley Grammar Level 4
Does it work? Yes
Will I continue to use it? YES

This will be our FIFTH year using Shurley Grammar. USE IT! IT IS THE BEST! It will help your kids with grammar . . . it will help your kids with literature . . . it will help your kids with composition . . . it will help your kid with a foreign language . . . JUST GET IT! I have to say it is one of the best Grammar curricula out there, for us.

Spelling

The Grammar of Spelling
Does it work? Yes
Will I continue to use it?  Yes and No

This is new to our curriculum as we just started using it over the summer. Does it work - YES? Do my girls like it - NO. BUT - they don't like any spelling curriculum I have ever purchased. They simply do not like spelling, that is all there is to it. I have been using this curriculum o and off for a couple of years. My little one is a great speller and my oldest daughter is a not so great speller. She could care less and there is nothing that is going to change that. She does not care how a word is spelled or why it is spelled a certain way or the way she thinks it should be spelled. Here's where grammar comes into play. (I didn't use Shurley Grammar with her UNTIL 3rd grade, so I totally failed her in that aspect!

Handwriting/Penmanship

Classically Cursive
Does it work? Yes
Will I continue to use it?  Yes

My daughters are both left-handed and they do not have the neatest handwriting. My older daughter is really fine-tuning her writing and it becoming so much neater these days. But adding in cursive is throwing her into a loop. My youngest child had poor writing skills. She has loads of open-ended letters in her printing and I am really hoping Classically Cursive will help this sloppy habit of hers.

Literature/Composition

Classical Composition II: Narrative
Does it work? YES
Will I continue to use it?  Yes

Grade 4 Books to Read Alone:  Twice Freed, The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow, Cathedral, Castle, Augustine, The Farmer's Boy, Beorn the Proud, Door in the Wall, Ink on His Fingers, The Kite Fighters, Son of Charlemagne

READ ALOUD: Beowulf: A Hero's Tale Retold, The Story of Joan of Arc, Favorite Medieval Tales, The Hobbit, Shakespeare's Macbeth

Omnibus/History/Social Studies/Geography

Mystery of History: Volume 4: Wars of Independence to Modern Times
Does it work? YES
Will I continue to use it?  Yes

We went a bit out of order — so if you prefer to begin in Grade 1 with  Mystery of History Volume I - Creation to the Resurrection and move progressively up, go ahead. I went in this order because my kid’s attend a private homeschool academy, and this was their rotation. I love and adore MOH - my kids LOVE history because of MOH! We are so excited to use this again this year. This is GOOD stuff!! I highly recommend it!

English/Vocabulary/Language

I feel this is covered well with Shurley Grammar and Lit/Comp work
Does it work? yes
Will I continue to use it?  yes

Science

Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics (Grade 4)
Does it work?  YES
Will I continue to use it? Yes, We love Apologia!

We are a Science family! I love Science now - when I was a kid - I WISH I had been taught with Apologia textbooks! I would have loved science instead of abhorring it. My children adore Science and I'm happy to fill their brains up with whatever they want.  We all adore Science and I will continue to be Science heavy in this house. This will be another exciting year with Apologia as we get through two textbooks. Exploring Creation With Chemistry and Physics and the Notebook Journal will be another repeat year for me as I used this when my son was in 4th grade, daughter in 2nd grade and little one in Kinder (she used the Junior Notebooking Journal, which worked really well for her!). We are super familiar with the text and will be using it a refresh our memories basically.

Biblical Studies/Religion/Memory

God's Great Covenant, OT 2: A Bible Course for Children
Does It Work? GGC - YES!
Will I continue to use?  YES!

I used this textbook for 6 years on a rotating schedule. So if you have kiddos in different grades, I would suggest beginning them both in the same book and just rotate from wherever you begin. For instance, if you have a 2nd grader and a 4th grader, have them both begin with either OT 1 or OT 2. Keep in mind the NT textbooks are a tad bit harder and the lower level grades may not be able to complete the assignments, but they absolutely could enjoy the stories.

Foreign Language

4th Grade Home School Curriculum

Logos Latin Level II (Grade 4)
Does It Work? YES!
Will I continue to use?  YES!

Doing Hard Things this year with Latin! I struggle with this language! I try really hard, but the language is just NOT my thing. Latin is always a struggle and I know we will have many hours of studying this year! But, we shall persevere!

Art & Music

Violin, Private Lessons and Chamber Orchestra for my 4th grader. Private Art classes at the academy, The Study of Art Through the Masters - Drawing
Does it work? Yes
Will I continue to use? Yes

Field Trips/Extra Activities

We have many field trips since we live in a great city with numerous museums that we are members of. Field Trip day will always and forever be a favorite. Field trips will be easier this year as I do not have to pick up my son from school every day.
