Today I am sharing our top picks for 10th Grade Homeschool Curriculum!

This year my daughter is a sophomore in high school, a 10th-grade student and we are continuing this home educating journey with her. I didn’t ever think I would homeschool my children through high school, but we are fully on board to homeschool high school now with my oldest daughter. This year, my 10th-grade student is attending a private homeschool academy two days a week, a hybrid homeschool.

Typical courses for 10th grade might include English 2, Algebra II/Geometry, Chemistry/Biology and U.S. History/World History. Plus a Foreign Language class and possibly music and physical education. In addition, students can begin to select course of interest for electives.

Here are my 2018-2019 homeschool curriculum (for 7th grade) ( for 9th grade) 2017-2018 homeschool curriculum, 2016-2017 homeschool curriculum, 2015-2016 homeschool curriculum, 2014-2015 home school curriculum,  2013-2014 home school curriculum,  2012-2013 school curriculum and 2011-2012 school curriculum posts. It is always amazing to me as each year passes and we have a successful year, especially as I head into my 10th year of FORMAL home educating! I never would have thought I would home educate my children for a decade!

2019 HOME SCHOOL CURRICULUM

10TH GRADE HOMESCHOOL CURRICULUM

Below is the 10th Grade Curriculum we will be using this year as my daughter is attending a Hybrid Homeschool Program. This curriculum is selected by the private academy and we have no control over the selection of the curriculum. Some of the curriculum we love and some, I would rather not use, but we don’t have that option unless my daughter completely drops the class and takes a study period instead.

Math:

Math: Algebra II Common Core, by Prentice Hall Grade 10:
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT: 1 credit

We have always used Saxon Math and it worked well for my mathematics despising daughter. My daughter’s Algebra II teacher is amazing and covers material really, really well. My daughter IS learning, but she will never be fond of math.

Applied Math and Science: Grade 10:
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT: 1 credit

This class is taught at the academy and there is not a textbook. Applied Math & Science is a class designed to go beyond the standard mathematics curriculum and it looks at specific topics in mathematics. There are three units taught in Applied Math & Science: Programming/Technology, Stats/Scientific Design, and Applied Economics.

Language Arts:

Classical Rhetoric I: Grade 10:
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT: 1 credit

The academy is teaching this class and using this textbook: Fitting Words: Classical Rhetoric for the Christian Student textbook and workbook. This course teaches the five faculties of rhetoric.  A heavy emphasis is placed on effective public speaking and winsome daily dialogue.

Spelling and Grammar:

Literary Analysis: Grade 10:
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT: 1 credit

This is an academy taught class and does not use a textbook. This is taught in tandem with Omnibus V and class discussion center around the classic novels and books assigned in Omnibus. This course teaches students to interpret and analyze literature and poetry by critically examining the authors’ use of literary devices (such as setting, narration, theme, tone, etc.) and literary elements. Students respond and interact with books during the class and participate in discussions regarding the elements and devices found in the literature. They will be able to define and comprehend multiple literary elements. The goal of this course is for the students to become more insightful readers by learning how to interact with the books and will be better prepared for college literature classes.

Spelling/Vocabulary: Grade 10: combined with Omnibus
English/Literature/Composition: combined with Omnibus

In the past, we always used a grammar curriculum from Shurley English. Last year, we opted for Abeka and BJU Press. We both liked BJU Press and I really would have liked to continue using this, but English/Spelling/Grammar/Literature is combined with Omnibus this year per the academy.

History:

Omnibus/History/Social Science:  Omnibus V
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT: 2 credits

Omnibus covers literature, history, philosophy, and theology in one course. Omnibus V engages students in evaluating, through a biblical lens, humanity’s many ponderings about the nature of reality and God.  It encourages students to develop richer understandings of how God has woven and presented his person and vision into what we might call the magnificence, and tragedy, of the human experience.  In so doing, Omnibus V intends to train students to meditate on and affirm more intelligently the truth claims of Christianity

Omnibus V: The Medieval World: The student text leads the student through the study of the great works focusing on great works of theology, history, and literature of the medieval world beginning with the works of St. Augustine and ending in the Reformation era; teaching with the emphasis on ideas, not simply information.

This is a very rigorous, intensive class that my daughter does not enjoy and finds to be very boring. The academy is not utilizing the Omnibus V textbook, Omnibus V: The Medieval World. However, I did purchase the textbook for my own reference to aide and guide my daughter as this class is very difficult.

The Literature books that are being read in Omnibus V this year are as follows:

Science:

Science + LAB: Grade 9: Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry Science and the notebook journal
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT: 1 credit

This class is following the schedule put out by Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry for this subject. We have been using Apologia Science curriculum for 9 years now. For high school science, this is very on par with what the public school uses, except it is Christian based, which we like. My daughter LOVES Chemistry!

Since my daughter attends an actual class this year with an instructor, I didn’t need to purchase the option Chemistry Video instruction DVD to go along with the Apologia curriculum. I watch the DVD lessons with her and then she reads to me this year. Normally in the past I read to her, but this year, I told her she had to read on her own.

Biblical Studies/Religion/Memory: combined with Omnibus

Foreign Language:

Foreign Language: Advanced Latin/Lingua Latin + workbook
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT: 1 credit

This year for Advanced Latin, we are using Lingua Latin and the Lingua Latin Workbook. Lingua Latin is a novel by Hans Ørberg. For the past 6 years, my daughter has memorized endless lists of Latin words and their meanings and endless lists of Latin endings. All of this memorizing has prepared her for reading a Latin novel. She is reading Lingua Latin, which is 100% in Latin and then completing the Lingua Latin workbook that goes along with it.

This is my daughter’s 8th year taking Latin! 8 years of Latin and she still can’t speak Latin! LOL! She can read Latin fluently though! In 8th grade, she completed Visual Latin 2 and in 9th grade, we opted for Lingua Latin with the Lingua Latin workbook. I also highly recommend Visual Latin for a foreign language. She is continuing with the Lingua Latin this year as she only completed half of the book and workbook last year in 9th grade.

Electives:

Art & Music:  Violin, Private Lessons, Chamber Orchestra and Youth Orchestra, Private Art lessons
Field Trips/Extra Activities:

We have many field trips since we live in a great city with numerous museums that we are members. Field Trip day will always and forever be a favorite. Field trips will be easier this year as I do not have to pick up my son from school every day.

Here’s a post on our workboxes and how we use them in our homeschool classroom! I also have some printable workbox tags.

I really hope this helps in planning your homeschool curriculum for 10th grade homeschooled students! Make sure to check out my other homeschool grade curriculum picks.
