The Space Between Us is a movie that takes place in the future. It is a story about a teenage boy whose name is Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) and he happens to have been born on Mars. The Space Between Us makes for the perfect summer movie when school is out!
Gardneris conceived on Earth, but is born on Mars when his astronaut mother takes a mission assignment to colonize Mars with a number of other scientists. He is quite literally the first human being born on the planet Mars. He never meets his mother, who dies giving birth to him on mars or his father, who didn't travel to Mars.
He is the universe's biggest secret. Nathaniel Shepherd (Gary Oldman), an eccentric explorer, led the mission to colonize Mars with his company, Genesis Space Technologies, and has kept Gardner a secret from the world.
East Texas, as the colonized planet Mars is called, is home to Gardner and 14 scientists and a robot named Centaur. Gardner's surrogate mother, Kendra (Carla Gugino), to raise Gardner on East Texas. Gardner grows up surrounded by brilliant men and women, but is lacking in social skills of a child and is quite lonely.
The fact that Gardner was born on Mars changes the makeup of his bones and his vital organs. He is told that he would never be able to survive on the planet Earth and therefore must live out his life forever on the planet Mars. However, he yearns to travel to Earth to meet his birth father. It is decided that he will be able to visit Earth for a short time.
Once Gardner lands on Earth, his plot begins and he escapes and is on a mission to locate his father with his friend, Tulsa (Britt Robertson). He was able to engage Tulsa whilst on Mars through an online friendship and searches her out on his arrival.
They are off on an adventure of a lifetime, much to the dismay of his surrogate mother and the head of Genesis Space Technologies. Where ever they go, the first question Gardner asks everyone he meets is “What’s your favorite thing about Earth?”
The adventure take Tulsa and Gardner to discover Earth. It is funny to see common things through the eyes of Gardner. They steal cars, crash crop dusters, see the Grand canyon (which in my opinion is a must do for any first tine visitor to Earth) and check out the cliffs on Malibu. All while being chased by Genesis Space Technologies and on the search for his father and all while the clock is quickly ticking away for Gardner.
I like to think the theme of The Space Between Us is about humanity in general. All humans has the innate ability to dream . . . but it's what we do about those dreams that makes all humans amazing.
