When I was a teenager we rented VHS tapes to gather together for Teen Movie Nights. Today, it is so much easier to get my kids together with their friends to watch movies. I dont’ have to travel to a rental facitily to rent a movie. There really is no hassle at all. I don’t even usually have to do anything except prepare the food for all the young adults and teeneagers in attendance.

My son and his friend simply log on to our account and purchase the movie of their choice in a digital copy. No more late fees to worry about at all. No more searching for misplace or lost DVDs.My kids can pick the movie they want to view and it is always in stock. The great aspect about digital movie pruchases is they can watch the movie as many times as they like if they missed any of the action because the noise level is too loud from the Movie Night with Teens.

My kiddos recently watched The Darkest Minds, which is out on Digital and DVD now. They selected this movie becuase they love all things in the sci-fi genre.

Discover the power inside us all

The Darkest Minds Synopsis: When teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities, they are declared a threat by the government and detained. One of the most powerful young people, Ruby, escapes from her camp and joins a group of runaways who are seeking a safe haven. Betrayed by the adults in power, this newfound family soon realizes that running is not enough -- they must use their collective powers to wage a resistance and take back their future. through a dystopian future where kids and teenagers are locked up in camps by the government after they start developing mysterious new abilities.

The Darkest Minds is a dystopian Young Adult novel by Alexandra Bracken made into a movie. This sci-fi genre for young adults is the perfect movie to select for a DIY Movie Night Bar Themed Party for Young Adults, Teens and Tweens.

THE DARKEST MIND ROCKY ROAD

INGREDIENTS

2 large bars of good chocolate (I used one milk and one dark)
1/2 cup melted butter
1 pkg soft red licorice (Aussie licorice is best)
1 pkg marshmallows, assorted colours
1/2 cup coconut flakes
1/2 packet English biscuits**

1-2 tsp icing sugar for topping (OPTIONAL)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Line a pan with wax paper or foil. Crumble the biscuits into a large bowl. Snip the marshmallow into halves or quarters with scissors and add those to the bowl. Cut licorice into small pieces with kitchen scissors and add to the bowl. Add the coconut flakes as well. Mix gently and set the bowl aside aside.

  2. Melt the butter. Break the bars of chocolate coursely and add to the melted butter. Let it sit for a few minutes and then begin to stir until the chocolate is smooth and has melted. Pour melted chocolate into the bowl of biscuits/marshmallow bowl. Stir to coat all the pieces in the chocolate. Pour into your prepared pan in an even layer. But, don’t try to press and get an even layer because the point is to have a ROCKY ROAD treat. Place your dish in the fridge for 1-2 hours or overnight. OPTIONAL: Dust with powdered sugar and chop into bars or squares to serve.

**English Biscuits are easily found at any grocer. For a larger selection, head to your Euro grocer. I happen to love a good English biscuit. Everytime I eat one, I think of Sherlock Holmes shouting for his biscuits with his morning tea! I use and love the Lotus Biscoff brand. But really, any biscuit will do, as long as it is crunchy.

A lot of Rocky Road recipes add nuts, but I don’t like nuts in my food or candy, so I didn’t add any. Please feel free to add your favorite nuts if you like. You can also switch out the licorice for any other sort of soft chewy candy you like, or eliminate them altogether.

The wonderful aspect of making a Rocky Road is you can change the marshmallows up based on the holiday or theme of the party! Simply use different colored marshamallows. For THIS Movie Night Bar Party for Young Adults to celebrate the DVD release of The Darkest Minds, I made a Rocky Road with ORANGE, RED and GREEN marshamallows (I couldn’t locate gold marshmallows) to match the Homeland Security Advisory System for classifying the IAANs.

GREEN: SUPER-SMART

ORANGE: MIND-CONTROLLING

Every Movie Night needs drinks as well and I made up these Raspberry Lemonade Slushies. If you have a Vitamix, these will be super easy to prepare. A blender will work just as well. You don’t have to use raspberries, any frozen fruit will work well for this Raspberry Lemonade Slushie recipe.

Raspberry Lemonade Slushies

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 bag frozen raspberries

  • juice 3 lemons

  • 1 litre ginger ale

  • Ice

  • 3 tbsp Agave Nectar

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Put all the ingredients in a Vitamix and pulse until slushie.

Every movie night includes popcorn, so naturally, I had to pop up some popcorn and amplify it a bit with some more chocolate.

Chocolate-Drizzled Popcorn

INGREDIENTS

  • 2/3 cup popcorn kernals

  • 3 tbsp coconut oil

  • 1/2 tsp real salt

  • 1 bar milk OR dark chocolate, melted

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Melt the coconut oil and place the kernals in the melted oil. Cover and pop. When you hear the kernals slowing, turnt he heat off until the kernals have all popped.

  2. Pour the popcorn on a sheet pan covered with wax paper (or parchment paper). Drizzle melted chocolate over the top with a fork or whisk. Put in the fridge to set for approximately 10 minutes. OPTIONAL: add colors sprinkles or chocolate candies.
