Meet Sphero 2.0 {Review} A Fun Ball You Control With Your Smartphone

A robotic ball you control with your smartphone . . . why yes . . . yes, it does exist.

Sphero 2.0

Sphero is this wonderfully, amazing robotic ball that you control with your smartphone or tablet. It is waterproof, pet-proof, programmable and SO MUCH FUN! Sphero 2.0 is an iOS and Android compatible device that features over 30 free apps that stimulate my kids. Who am I kidding, my husband and I are enjoying it just as much.

Sphero 2.0

When you open your new box of Sphero, it is ready to go. Fully charged! My children had already downloaded all the Sphero apps to their iPods before I even finished opening up the box and reading the instructions to meet Sphero 2.0. Sphero rolled right out of the box at a speedy 7 feet per second! The only addition my kids want to be able to do is to "swipe" Sphero away from their sibling when one of them is already connected to the device via Bluetooth. Waiting to play is so very hard. Sphero is pet proof, waterproof, and ready for any adventure your kids can dream of with a range of up to 100 feet whilst connected.

Sphero 2.0

As a home educator, I love that Sphero 2.0 is not just another toy or electronic game. Sphero strengthen connections in visual perception and motor coordination as my kids maneuver the controller to move the Sphero ball in different directions. Sphero has over ten different programming environments, and apps like MacroLab. My youngest, who is eight years old, was even able to learn how to control the Sphero with her tablet.

Sphero is on a mission to make learning fun. Sphero can even be brought into the classroom with crash courses in programming using MacroLab and orbBasic. Check out the Sphero SPRK (Schools, Parents, Robots, Kids) program which helps kids understand the basics of programming, robotics and math. Visit GoSphero {DOT} com/Education for more information. These little crash courses will aide parents to prevent Summer Brain Drain!

Sphero 2.0

This robotic ball is teaching my children and enabling them to become our next innovators and inventors. My children are engaging with technology like never before. Instead of staring at a screen for an hour, not engaging their little brains, they are creating obstacle courses for the Sphero to race through. Sphero can be driven in any direction, turn on a dime, flip in the air, change colors and so much more! Each of my children have named Sphero its own special name and they each have their favorite color to change Sphero whilst steering on adventures.

Sphero 2.0

Instead of grumbling about smartphone games, I now happily bring the smartphone to family game night, as long as Sphero is involved. We drive Sphero over ramps, drive circles around our rabbit and my son puts the Nubby Cover on and attempts to jump Sphero up the stairs. The Nubby Cover protects the Sphero against the elements, and my staircase. Even though we have not taken ours outdoors yet, the Nubby Cover protect against scratches and scuffs, and my son claims it gives him unbeatable traction.

Sphero 2.0

Sphero provides hours of hands-on, open-ended fun, play and learning for this family. I think this is the perfect "toy" to avoid Summer Brain Drain. While I am perfectly happy driving Sphero around my house, my kids are all about the cool games. Orbotix has delivered my kids with 30 free apps to select from. Bowling and golf with the Sphero enhances these otherwise boring sports. My husband really likes to play The Rolling Dead. You are in a real-world environment where zombies come after your Sphero and you have to drive away to stay alive. But he loves to kill all the zombies with fireballs instead of running away.

My kids are waiting for their friends to get a Sphero as well and then they can all play tag with each of their Spheros. My daughters have yet to use Sphero in their hands to control on-screen games like Nyan Cat Space Party or Exile. However, Sphero can be picked up and used as a 3D mouse or as a controller for games. My son enjoys these various games very much, but is still figuring out the art of holding the Sphero and controlling the games.  This is where the visual perception and motor coordination are hard at work in my son's brain.
