My father didn’t have any issues with my brothers and I shooting a BB gun or any other gun for that matter. In fact, he was quite insistent that I learn how to shoot a gun. I can say today that I am so very happy my father had the fortitude to instill this skill in his only daughter.
My brothers, cousins and I would gather up every old tin or aluminum can that we could find on the farm and have shooting contests with the BB Guns that everyone had to share. I have such fond memories of these moments with my family. We went through pellets so fast during these contests my father created a mold for all us to cast our own pellets to use.
The only BB guns that my father purchased for my brothers and my cousins were the Daisy Red Ryder BB Guns. The Holy Grail of BB guns. The BB gun of Ralphie's dreams from the movie A Christmas Story! I can always spot a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun because of the lariat logo.
My son is very interested in bows, takes lessons, and shoots with my husband quite frequently. My son recently received a new bow, but has been fondly looking at his cousin's gun. We were running low on ideas for Christmas gifts for my son since he is on the cusp of becoming a teenager. I fondly recalled how much fun I had as a child with my brother's Daisy Red Ryder. My husband thought this would be a great, legendary holiday gift and it doesn't hurt that my husband loves Ralphie!
I set off to Cabela's with my little one in search of a Daisy BB gun for my son for Christmas. You can find all the details and photos of my shopping trip in my #bb4me Google Plus album. We had no issues locating the Daisy Red Ryder BB Guns when walked into the gun area at Cabela’s. In fact, they were right on an end display. Cabela's also has all the necessary accessories needed for your young child to shoot, including targets, stands, and shooting glasses. Be sure to ask for assistance from the many employees that are on hand to advise and assist you.
The Daisy BB gun remains faithful to its original design and looks just like I remembered it to be. A Daisy Red Ryder BB gun has been the dream of youths for a very long time and now my son is going to be the proud owner of one. My husband even told me that he wished for one for many Christmases but his parents would never purchase one because "You'll shoot your eye out". My son will now be the proud owner of a Daisy Red Ryder that is the spitting image of the one I cherished growing up!
The Daisy Red Ryder is recommended for ages 10 and older with adult supervision.
Please find these Ten Shooting Safety Rules that I obtained from the Daisy website:
Airguns are real guns, not toys. You or others can be killed or seriously injured if these rules are not followed.
Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
Only load or cock a gun when you are shooting.
Check your target and beyond your target.
Anyone shooting or near a shooter should wear shooting glasses.
Never climb or jump with a gun.
Keep the muzzle clear.
Guns not in use should always be unloaded.
Respect other people's property.
